Finding Hope and Help: Brooke & Anita’s Journey Overcoming Stigma with BryLin’s Support

In the face of mental illness, hope can blossom from struggle. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we revisit Brooke and Anita Ketterer’s story – a testament to resilience, love, and the power of overcoming stigma to find help. A decade ago, Brooke battled anxiety and depression, leaving her future uncertain. But then, their path intersected with BryLin Hospital, a beacon of hope and help for Brooke and her family.

Breaking the Stigma and Seeking Help

In 2014, after a long struggle, Anita, Brooke’s mom, made a life-changing decision. Fueled by love and a fierce desire for her daughter’s healing, she reached out to BryLin Hospital seeking help. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of their journey towards recovery, advocacy, and a life free from stigma.

From Crisis to Triumph with BryLin’s Support

Today, Brooke stands tall as a testament to the human spirit’s incredible strength. With the support of BryLin’s dedicated staff during her week-long stay, Brooke didn’t just survive; she thrived. Two jobs, college scholarships, and a blossoming desire to share her story – all a testament to the exceptional care and compassion she received at BryLin.

Dr. Martin’s Kindness: A Light in the Darkness

Central to Brooke’s journey was the guidance of Dr. Chris Martin, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at BryLin Hospital. Dr. Martin’s kindness and compassion during Brooke’s darkest moments left an indelible mark. Brooke recalls one of his analogies, comparing a bad day to a bruise that heals. This powerful image serves as a constant reminder – pain is temporary, and hope endures.

Giving Back: Sharing Hope and Breaking Stigma

Inspired by the life-changing impact of BryLin, Brooke and Anita embarked on a mission to give back and break the stigma surrounding mental health. Their commitment is evident in everything they do. From adorning their food truck with mental health awareness ribbons to sharing their story on Facebook Live with the Anti Stigma Coalition of Erie County, to treating BryLin’s staff during Hospital Week – Brooke and Anita are beacons of generosity and hope.

A Beautiful Partnership: BryLin and the Ketterer Family

Anita’s initial call to BryLin in 2018 sparked a beautiful partnership, built on shared gratitude and a commitment to mental health advocacy. “I am so thankful for the amazing work you do for children and families,” Anita shared. This sentiment is echoed by Eric Pleskow, CEO of BryLin Hospital: “We are honored to play a role in Brooke’s recovery, and incredibly grateful for her family’s continued support of our staff.”
